Following the recent midterm elections, Yassamin Ansari has called for an immediate suspension of further advancements in artificial intelligence, emphasising the urgency to take action.
Surely, this would represent the worst-case scenario for the United States’ overall standing as a global superpower?
While I have no vested interest in US politics, even the most ardent Democrats should recognise the potential implications this could have for the economy and the advancement of life-saving technologies.
Artificial intelligence will continue to advance, regardless of whether the United States chooses to lead its development. The largest competitors such as China and Russia would surely benefit from any prolonged slowdown in American AI innovation, potentially gaining a significant technological and geopolitical advantage. Both countries have shown no signs of slowing their investments in the future of AI with budgets continuing to increase dramatically.
If Democrats pursue policies that substantially restrict AI development, the United States risks falling behind in an increasingly competitive global landscape. AI will play a pivotal role in humanities future, with the nations leading in artificial intelligence having considerable influence over the future of the global economy, national security, and international power dynamics.
If you’re in the USA, this must be a real concern. Hopefully, it’s still early days, and those elected will reconsider their priorities and focus on delivering what the people voted for, rather than hindering the advancement of technologies they appear to understand so little about.
